Ihram Clothing for Women: Umrah Dress Code for Ladies

Quick answer

Women have no prescribed ihram uniform. There is no required color, fabric or cut. Wear your normal modest clothing: loose, opaque and covering everything except your face and hands. Keep it free of perfume.

  • Don't wear a face veil (niqab) or gloves while in ihram (Sahih al-Bukhari 1838).
  • Do wear stitched clothing. The ban on shirts, turbans and trousers is addressed to men.
  • White is a popular choice, not a rule.
  • Avoid perfumed clothes and scented products once you enter ihram.

Most women arrive at the miqat unsure of one thing: do I need a special outfit? You don't. Ihram for men is two unstitched sheets. For women, the clothing rules are short, and most of them are things you already do. This guide covers what the sources say, what to avoid, and what is simply preference.

If you are travelling from India, you may have been given advice that was passed down through family and community: a particular fabric, a particular colour, a special ladies' ihram set. Much of it is well meant, and some of it reflects local custom rather than the texts. This guide separates what the sources say from what is habit, so you can decide with clear information.

What the sources say about women's ihram clothing

Two reports from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) set the clothing rules for ihram.

In Sahih al-Bukhari 1542, a man asks the Prophet ﷺ what a muhrim (a person in ihram) may wear. He answers that the muhrim should not wear shirts, turbans, trousers or a hooded cloak, and should avoid clothing scented with saffron or wars. The same list appears in Sunan Abi Dawud 1823, which Al-Albani graded sahih. Every garment named is a man's garment, which is why scholars read this list as addressed to men.

The report in Sahih al-Bukhari 1838 adds the rulings specific to women: a woman in ihram should not cover her face or wear gloves.

That is the full set of clothing restrictions in these reports. No color. No fabric. No designated garment.

Question For women in ihram Source
Fixed color or fabric None prescribed None in the reports above
Face veil (niqab) Avoid Bukhari 1838
Gloves Avoid Bukhari 1838
Clothes scented with saffron or wars Avoid Bukhari 1542
Stitched clothing Allowed (the shirt, turban and trouser ban is for men) Bukhari 1542
Hijab and modest coverage Unchanged Quran 24:31, 33:59

Does women's ihram have to be white?

No. White is the norm for men's ihram sheets, and that expectation has leaked into advice for women. For women it is a preference.

There is a general encouragement toward white clothing: the Prophet ﷺ said, "Wear your white garments, for they are among your best garments" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3878, graded sahih by Al-Albani). That is advice about dress in general. It is not an ihram requirement, and a woman in a black abaya or a colored dress is not doing anything wrong.

So why do so many women choose white, natural fabrics anyway? Practical reasons:

  • Heat. Light colors reflect sun during tawaf and the walk between Safa and Marwah.
  • Breathability. Cotton and linen let air through, which is why many people prefer them in warm weather. Synthetics trap heat and sweat.
  • Simplicity. A plain white set removes decisions and keeps you focused on worship.
  • Easy to keep clean. Marks show on white, so you know when to change.

Choose white if it helps you. Choose another color if it doesn't. Neither changes your Umrah.

Where a namaz makhna fits in

A namaz makhna is a prayer garment, not an ihram garment. Nothing about it makes your ihram valid or invalid. But Umrah means praying in many places, often crowded and often on short notice. A cotton namaz makhna lets you cover fully in seconds, over whatever you are already wearing.

Abaya Central's Noor | White Knee-Length Cotton Namaz Makhna is built for that job:

  • 100% pure cotton, milk white, lightweight and breathable
  • Fully opaque, not see-through even in direct light
  • Knee-length, free size, with a relaxed fit
  • Secure face fit that leaves the face open, with full under-chin and side-hair coverage
  • Elasticated sleeves for easier wudu
  • Tie-knot ribbons for an adjustable fit
  • Made in India

It comes in white for the reasons covered above: many women like a light, natural fabric for heat and simplicity. It is not a requirement. If you prefer another color for your Umrah, nothing in the rules of ihram stops you.

Pair it with our lanyard-borne Umrah Dua Cards, which keep the duas and etiquettes for ihram, tawaf, Sa'i and Zamzam in front of you without a phone or a heavy book.

The modesty baseline stays the same

Ihram does not relax hijab. The Quran's instruction to women is the same inside and outside ihram: "Let them draw their veils over their chests" (Quran 24:31, Clear Quran translation by Dr. Mustafa Khattab), and believing women are told to draw their outer garments over themselves (Quran 33:59).

In practice, your outfit should be:

  • Loose. It should not outline the body, especially when you bend, sit or move in a crowd.
  • Opaque. Check it in direct sunlight, not just indoors.
  • Covering. Hair, neck and chest covered by your scarf; arms and legs covered by your dress, or abaya.

Face covering and gloves

This is the rule women ask about most. Bukhari 1838 says a woman in ihram should not cover her face or wear gloves. So a fitted niqab and fitted gloves are out for the duration of ihram. Your sleeves reaching the wrist are ordinary clothing.

What about when unrelated men are close, as they will be in the Haram? A report from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) describes riders passing the women in ihram, who then lowered their outer garment over their faces and lifted it once the riders had passed (Sunan Abi Dawud 1833). Al-Albani graded this report da'if (weak), and scholars differ on the question. Many jurists allow a loose cloth held away from the skin; others do not. Ask your scholar, and follow the position of your madhab or your group's guide.

Perfume and scented products

Bukhari 1542 names clothing scented with saffron or wars as off-limits. Scholars extend the principle to fragrance in general once ihram begins. Make the switch before you leave home:

  • Use unscented soap, shampoo and laundry detergent.
  • Check lotions, hair oil, deodorant and wet wipes for added fragrance. That includes perfume oils, even natural, alcohol-free ones.
  • Pack your ihram outfits in a bag away from perfumed items.

Footwear and socks

The restriction on leather socks in Bukhari 1542 is part of the men's list. Women are not restricted on socks or closed shoes the way men are. Pick comfortable, slip-on footwear, because you will remove your shoes repeatedly at mosque entrances and will walk a long distance.

Custom versus the sources: common assumptions about ihram clothing

These are customs, not rulings. Most are passed on with good intentions, often from a relative's own trip, and they are worth separating from the texts.

  • "Ihram means one specific white outfit." No outfit or color is prescribed for women (see the table above). A modest dress or an abaya works, as long as hair, neck and chest are covered.
  • "White carries a different meaning for us, so I should avoid it." In some communities white is associated with mourning. In ihram it carries no such meaning, and it is simply a choice.
  • "Women must wear black in the Haram." Black abayas are common in Makkah, but that is local dress, not an ihram rule.
  • "You need a special ladies ihram set." There is no prescribed set. Your regular modest clothes are your ihram clothes.
  • "Perfume oil is fine because it is natural." Natural or alcohol-free makes no difference. Scholars extend the saffron and wars rule in Bukhari 1542 to fragrance in general.

Packing list for women

  • 2 to 3 loose, opaque abayas, good coverage prayer scarf or namaz makhna, dresses in cotton or another breathable fabric
  • Extra scarves or hijabs, since you may change or wash clothing during ihram
  • Unscented toiletries and detergent (leave perfumes and scented oils at home until you are out of ihram)
  • Comfortable socks and slip-on shoes
  • A waist-length cotton namaz makhna or prayer layer for quick coverage
  • A set of lanyard Umrah dua cards so your duas are always at hand
  • A small bag for used clothing, kept separate from clean sets

Frequently asked questions

Do women have to wear white for ihram?

No. No authentic report prescribes a color or fabric for women in ihram. White is a common choice for comfort and simplicity.

Is a black burqa or abaya compulsory in Makkah?

Not as part of ihram. Black is a common local style, but the ihram rules set no color. Follow your group's guidance for local dress expectations in the Haram.

Can I wear an abaya in ihram?

Yes, if it is modest, free of perfume, and you do not add a face veil or gloves. Stitched clothing is permitted for women.

Can women wear a niqab or gloves during Umrah?

Not while in ihram, according to Bukhari 1838. Scholars differ on lowering a loose cloth when unrelated men are close, so ask a scholar you trust.

Can I wear socks and shoes in ihram?

Yes. The footwear restriction in the hadith is part of the men's list.

Can I change or wash my clothes while in ihram?

Yes. Carry spare sets and keep them unscented.

Is a namaz makhna part of ihram?

No. It is an optional prayer garment. Some women find it convenient for quick, full coverage during salah.

Does ihram clothing change if I am traveling for Hajj instead?

The clothing rules for women in ihram are the same for Hajj and Umrah.
